Achieve a New Style
Using Decorative Painting Techniques

There are many ways to achieve an elegant look by using decorative painting. Many of us are tired of solid color walls and ceilings and are ready for different ways to transform our homes.

A lot of mystique has been built around decorative painting and in the past these techniques have only been used by professionals.

Often called faux painting, the effect of these techniques can range from subtle to bold and can transform any room into a dramatic focal point or enhance decorative elements you already have.

With many effects to choose from it wont be difficult to find a finish that will show your own unique sense of style.

Sponge Painting

Sponge painting effects. Deriving its name from the use of a sea sponge, this technique will create a variable texture that will have many natural effects similar to stone.

As one of the simplest finishes, many variations are possible depending on the colors chosen.

Cloth Distressing and Rag Rolling

This finish will produce a distressed look that is great for hiding imperfections in many surfaces. A very popular faux painting technique, its look can change depending on the colors and type of cloth used.

Stone paint applied with stippling brush.

Stippling

Produces an elegant aged look that adds dimension with fine textures and subtle depth.

This technique usually requires two people to produce the right effect, one to apply the glaze and the other to follow with a stippling brush.

Stone Paint

This paint is easy to apply and can produce several different effects. Available in various colors from several manufactures, it has a look and feel of stone that makes a popular choice for accent walls.

Metal Paint

Metal paint is in a category all its own and can turn the ordinary into something special. This paint can produce a subtle or bold accent on many surfaces such as a ceilings or crown molding.

With many colors to choose from, metallic finishes can provide many decorative possibilities.

Don’t be afraid to try something new or bold.

The key to success with any faux painting is knowledge and experience. To that end I have found a great site that has additional information on many faux finishing techniques and the steps needed to achieve them.

Faux painting can add that missing something to an otherwise dreary room. Plus all of these decorative painting techniques can be painted over to give you a fresh canvas, just in case you don't like the look.
