Our problem is that the previous owner of the house we just moved in has let one of the outside doors take the rain and there is now black stains on the bottom. I read on a French website (I’m from there…and my Australian husband has got no idea about varnish work), someone talking about using bleach on it! I’m a bit surprised, it there a better way?

Actually, at some of the commercial paint dealers you should find available a wood bleach for your need. I have always been careful to apply the bleach to the entire surface. I will be certain to use the most on the heaviest stains. You will need to rinse well and allow to dry. Sand and try applying two coats of stain to help cover the discoloration.
