Door Varnish Wearing Off

I have a high-quality wood front door with some kind of varnish that is wearing off due to age and weathering. Can I just wipe clean any dust and apply a spray or brush on a polyurethane without sanding first?

A light sanding is recommended. This will help the new finish stick and stay stuck. Also use a good exterior spar varnish. This will stick to everything, polyurethane doesn't stick as well to old varnish.
