I am about to stain a piece of Hickory wood. Should I use wood conditioner before staining or should I use wood grain filler before staining?

Use nothing… perhaps a light fine sanding, then dust it clean… assuming the wood is natural and unfinished… just go ahead and stain it… using HIGH QUALITY MATERIAL and proper staining technique… but what about after you are done? ……. Give it a coat of Varnish… perhaps clear, oil, satin finish…
