STICKY CABINETS

Anonymous asked 10 years ago

I CLEANED CABINETS AND DOORS THEN PUT MINWAX STAIN OVER TOP OF ALREADY FINISHED CABINETS. THEY WERE OLD AND SCRATCHED AND THEY HAD A LOT OF OLD GREASE ON THEM. I CLEANED THEM BUT AFTER I PUT THE STAIN ON THEY HAVE NOT DRIED FOR 2 WEEKS, THEY ARE STILL STICKY. HELP WHAT DO I DO NEXT?

Most likely there is a residue still on the cabinets from the cleaning. You will need to remove the stain and start over.

Try using mineral spirits and see if the stain can be removed that way. (Note: Dispose of soiled rags in a water filled metal container.) If this doesn't remove the stain then a stripper will be needed.

It is also possible that a light wiping with mineral spirits could help dry-out the stain, at least to a point that a clear finish (varnish) can be applied. A clear finish is needed to protect the stain.
