How do I paint a brick fireplace?

Brick is very paintable and looks good when finished. The steps are very simple.

1-Dust off and clean the brick. If you have any soot deposits clean with a mild soap and water, rinse well and allow to dry.

2-Apply acrylic primer to the brick. The product I like is Zinsser 1-2-3 acrylic primer. It can be tinted if you plan on using a dark color. Apply with a lamb’s wool roller, ¾ - 1 inch thick, and a good nylon brush. The roller will work for the surface of the brick, but the mortar joints will need to be brushed. Pay special attention to the edges of the brick as runs will form here. Allow the primer to dry for at least 1 hour before painting.

3-Caulk any cracks and small holes in the brick and mortar.

4-The best paint is 100% acrylic. The eggshell or satin sheen works well but any sheen can be used. Apply the paint the same way as the primer. It’s better to apply two coats than one thick coat.
