The straight lines of old-school stick people, have been replaced with a modern version that features a lot more curves, angles, and creativity. Stick people are perfect for decorating the children’s bathroom, a fun guest room, or even along a long hallway. They add color, visual interest and can represent those who live in the house, or they can be random. If you are looking for just the right painted accent for your whimsical home, stick people might be just the thing.
Before They Arrive
While it may be tempting to just start painting those stick figures on your walls, take a moment to make sure that the walls are up for the challenge. They should have a fresh, clean coat of paint that is not chipping, flaking, or bubbling. The finish should ideally be flat or eggshell, as glossy or semi-glossy can distract from the painted people on the wall. If your walls are in need of some tender loving care, take the time to apply a fresh coat of paint and wait for it to dry completely. Not only will your walls look better at the end of the process, but the painted figures will last longer, as the paint will have a smoother finish.
Getting Started
The basic shapes that you will want to practice drawing and painting before you attempt them on the wall are circles, triangles, rectangles and squares. Today’s modern stick people have round heads surrounded by curls or straight lines for hair. They also have triangular bodies, rectangle legs and arms, and hands that are usually small circles. Practice sketching out a few different styles and looks for your personal stick figures until you get the right look for the characters you are trying to create. The more you practice, the easier it will be when you paint the stick figures on the wall.
Great Colors
One of the great advantages of painting modern stick people on your walls is that they provide a lot of color. Not only can you add a fun and whimsical design to your space, but you can also infuse colors that you might not normally use. A hot pink and white polka dot dress on a female stick figure, for example, might not be in your normal decor color scheme, but it opens up a world of fun and exciting accent color possibilities. Not only does it broaden the scope of your decorating power, but it also allows you to match those hard to coordinate with colors that you are stuck with. Bathroom tiles are an especially good example, because if you are trying to figure out a decorating theme to coordinate with the green tiles you are stuck with, adding stick figures with coordinating outfit colors to the space can be the fresh and whimsical answer you need.
Think outside of the box when painting modern stick figures and embrace the colors and designs that make them so appealing. You can turn any room into a fun space by adding a few geometric shapes that make you smile.
