Painting exterior old particle board.

I recently got the bid on a job painting the exterior of an old garage made of particle board. I prepped the exterior and huge flakes of the old board came off.
My biggest mistake was to roll that exterior instead of using a spray rig which I could have rented. I wasted ALOT of paint, small chunks of paint mixed with the board gets all over the roller, the ground, in the paint pan and mostly you. Some times cutting costs just sucks!
