What is a good and hard clear finish for a soft wood gun stock? The wood is so soft you can dent it with a finger nail very easy. Thanks for any help.

Shellac or varnish will work well. The shellac will be the best as it is hard and easily fixed; only needing a rub down with denatured alcohol and another coat.
Both of these choices can be rubbed onto the surface. For shellac use the french polish method and for varnish make sure to purchase a rubbing varnish.
