We have casement windows we would like to paint. They have been stained and varnished. After sanding them, is it best to use an oil based primer and then a latex paint. Is it good to put on two coats of paint? Thanks. I am painting just the sash.

Use an oil base primer. Something that dries quick will work best, like Zinsser Cover Stain. Also use a latex paint. Dries fast so the windows can be shut sooner and is more resistant to the weather and temperature extremes that all windows must handle.
