You need to "set" the nails (if they are not set) by pounding them in (about 1/16 inch) using a nail setter punch… then use painter's putty to fill them before painting… apply it with your hand and smooth off the area afterwords making sure the hole is completely filled flush… (no "half moons" as we call them)…
