What color should a door be painted when it is framed in wood?

by Darla

We live in a very old home where all of the original doors are solid wood. We recently put a new door in and had it framed in the same wood as what already exists in our home, to match the framing of all the doors in our house.

The door is a paint grade door, not a stain grade door and I don't know what color we should paint the door. The door has a leaded glass window in it so really there is not a lot to paint. We've put a coat of white on it but I don't like it. Can we paint it the wall color?

Answer

Using the wall color is a nice effect since the frame and trim is a different color. This will produce some continuity to the wall and door. You can also choose a complimenting accent color that would allow the door to stand out more but still go with the room's decor.

Both effects look good. It is a matter of having a subtle difference between the wall and door or a dramatic effect that immediately draws your eyes to the door. The nice part is the door can be repainted if you don't like the color.
