I have a huge wall in my den covered with (80’s) dark brown mixed with reddish brick from floor to ceiling and a fireplace in the middle. It has a large wooden mantle that goes all the way across the room (black) and the mortar is black as well. It’s like a feakin’ dungeon!

I want to paint it with tan bricks and/or white mantle and brick step. This is a beautiful large room with double french doors out into my backyard, but it’s so dark with the brick wall and I also have 1/2 wall, wood paneling, I’m going to paint as well.

Anyway, I don’t want to start this and find out that the paint won’t cover or adhere to the grout.

The paint will stick as long as the brick and mortar (grout) is properly prepared and primed. I recommend using a 100% acrylic universal primer, both Kilz and Zinsser have good products for this project.

The actual prep might involve washing if there is soot from the fireplace. Otherwise, remove any dust with a vacuum and start priming. Any repairs can be done either before or after priming.
