How can I remove old paint and repaint trim?

Questions & AnswersCategory: Paint Preparation QuestionsHow can I remove old paint and repaint trim?
Lizzy asked 10 years ago

The trim on my home is in desperate need of repainting. The paint is chipped in most sections and is impossible to remove all of it with a scraper. I am not in the position to be able to replace the trim nor can I pay someone to paint it for me. But before I can paint it I need to remove the remaining old thick and chipped paint.

According to our EPA, if you were to hire this job done, your costs have tripled since April 22nd. This due to laws enacted affecting homes built prior to 1978.

Now, with that being said, you will need to take precautions with regard to breathing and inhaling the dust you create in removing the probably lead based coatings.

Wagner makes an excellent mechanical paint remover which works better than a sander. Available at most home improvement stores, I highly recommend it. The pads are not cheap, but you will find it to be a fun way to spend your Saturday.

If possible, remove paint as long as you can for one day at a time. Then carefully prime and finish the stripped areas before moving on to removing more paint. This will prevent the new paint from cracking and peeling due to too much moisture in the wood. Please feel free to contact me via my website to ask any further questions.
