I want to put a coat of urethane over a old lane cedar chest that had been stored in a basement. How do I remove mildew spots on the lower sides without stripping it?

Try light sanding first… then use a rag with TSP Cleaner… or use Vinegar and water… there are plenty of mildew removers on the commercial market today… take a look…
