Paint and Varnish Compatibility

Harry asked 10 years ago

I am making a plaque with engraved words. I want to paint the words and then varnish the plaque or vice versa. What’s the best combination of paint and varnish and which should be done first?

Varnish the entire plaque first to seal up the wood, including the letters. Allow the varnish to dry overnight. Now paint the letters using an oil based paint. This way you can paint and wipe up any over-flow off the surface or letter edges without causing any problems.
