Painting over stained fence posts.

I have a water base stained wooden fence around my pool. The stain is at least five years old and mostly gone. I want to replace the wood panels with vinyl and paint the posts and cross members white. The wood to be painted is very dry. Is any good quality exterior paint advisable?

You need to scrape off any loose paint or varnish, make any hole or crack repairs with putty, exterior spackle or caulk… then prime the posts using an exterior grade oil base Sealer Primer… then finish coat with a high quality exterior house paint…
