Restain old cabinets.

Patricia Sanders asked 10 years ago

I am redoing my kitchen cabinets. I have stripped and sanded course to fine. I applied the stain and wiped the excess and am getting blotches. Is there anything that can prevent this? What am I doing wrong?

At this point, I have but one recommendation. Sand off the stain and begin anew.

After you remove the new stain, I am going to ask you to do something strange. You will need to take a wet sponge and wet all your raw wood evenly. Water is an excellent conditioner to prevent the blotches from re-occurring.

Allow at least overnight dry time between wiping on the water and applying the stain. Be certain to work evenly in all applications.

A few things can cause the blotching, and one main thing could you have done "Wrong." It's possible you did not remove all the stripper chemical.
