Staining maple a darker color.

Staining maple (new wood) a darker color to match some birch wood already stained. With out loosing the grain. Do not want it to look painted on. The maple not wanting to pick up any real stain color.

Do you mean water stain by that? Maybe you have to remove some wax or protection layer first, by abrasing and cleaning.

If possible, I'd recommend water staining first. With new woods, it goes right into the wood. After that, you can lacquer it for protection and sheen. Check my website on it, if you like (search for staining wood).
