Clear primer/sealer?

I want to do some decorative painting on bare wood (poplar). I’d like for the wood to show through on most of the surface. What would I use to protect the wood a little so I could also paint over with acrylic in some areas?

Kelly Moore's Kelthane is very good and water based.

Thanks so much for your responses. I really appreciate it. An untinted acrylic glaze may be just the thing. Especially since I can add some color to the glaze if I want. I'll be looking into your suggestions.
