The Practical House Painting Guide
I want to do some decorative painting on bare wood (poplar). I’d like for the wood to show through on most of the surface. What would I use to protect the wood a little so I could also paint over with acrylic in some areas?

You could use a Semi-Transparent Stain…
An other way to do this is to pre-seal the wood with a clear acrylic wood sealer. Lightly sand and remove the dust before applying paint/glaze or whatever you will be using.

Deft and Coronado Aquaplastic are both very good interior waterbased finishes. For exterior use waterbased Varethane spar urethane is good. Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams have there own versions that will work well. Plus some of these are also available in spray cans for convenience.
You shouldn't have any problems finding a compatible sealer to use.
Now that I put more thought to this; why not use untinted acrylic glaze? This could be the best option overall.
No matter which product you use do a test piece before committing to the entire project.
Sherwin Williams… I have over 45 years in the Painting Trade and have used virtually ALL there is to sample… I am not trying to promote any product but only trying to INSURE that you'll be satisfied with the quality and performance of SW over all of the rest, in this and many, many other applications … Good Luck!
Kelly Moore's Kelthane is very good and water based.
Thanks so much for your responses. I really appreciate it. An untinted acrylic glaze may be just the thing. Especially since I can add some color to the glaze if I want. I'll be looking into your suggestions.
