Clear varnish over painted wood.

Questions & AnswersCategory: Exterior Painting QuestionsClear varnish over painted wood.
Sherri Sherk asked 10 years ago

I have made some lawn ornaments from plywood cutouts, primed and then painted with exterior paint. There is white in the Santa beard and everything I have found in a marine varnish turns it yellow. Is there a better recommended product I can use that will give some protection from the sun and weather but will remain clear? Thanking you in advance for your help…….

All varnishes will add a little amber color. Technically you don't need any additional protection as the primer and exterior paint will do a good job. This is the same combo that is on your house.

If you still feel the need to add a coat or two of a clear you could try Varathane's exterior water based spar urethane. It doesn't seem to have the same amount of amber color. The semi-gloss would be a good choice.
