Exterior Paint Problem

Dione Christensen asked 10 years ago

We removed asbestos tiles from our house to expose wood siding.

We used a water based primer and a water based paint. The paint was guaranteed for 25 years. After one year the paint is coming off on the side of the house most exposed to the weather. We scraped down the cracked parts and re-primed with an oil based paint and painted over with the original water based paint as we were told that would work. A month later it to is coming off.

Where should we go from here?

The problem is you put a latex primer on the first time and it underlays all your following work…

* I would suggest you have the entire surfaces pressure washed to get down as far as possible to the bare wood…

* Then prime it with (after 48hrs dry time) Zinsser Cover Stain (Home Depot) or Kilz Oil Exterior Primer Stain Block…

* Then finish coat with Sherwin Williams SWP (a high grade oil paint)…
