Have old 70’s stained cabinets-have a painter coming tomorrow to estimate what is will cost to strip and paint them. What is a ballpark figure for this kind of work, so I have a clue if he is outrageous or not.

Cost depends on many things; amount of cabinets, style, condition (overall). Also stripping isn't necessary to paint your cabinets, unless the old finish is failing then sanding should take care of it.
A standard set of kitchen cabinets could cost $1500-2000 including all materials.
