Which wall to paint darker?

I have a staircase in my living room. Now I want to paint the staircase wall one shade of teal and the living room another shade of teal, darker shades of teal with banister and trim. Which should the darker teal, living room or the stairway?

Most likely the stair case wall would look better the darker color. It is impossible to know for certain without a photo to look at.
